Mapping Human Decision-Making Skills to Educational Objectives: A Framework for Assessment

Abstract

The cultivation of decision making skills stands as an indispensable cornerstone for individual success of students, both for the attainment of educational, professional, and personal goals. Many of these skills are taught in grade and secondary schools contexts, but are not always based on the outcomes of existing empirical studies of the field, but instead on hunches of what “should” work for students. To help to close the gap between the worlds of practice and science, the authors propose to bridge the multi-faceted realm of decision making science with that of established standards and educational objectives that are part of the field of decision education. We do so toward providing a path for innovative and targeted means of assessment. We emphasize the multi-faceted use of a tool like the map for fields related to decision education, including media literacy education, among others.
